Extreme Guide to Video Capture & Editing

Guide By:  Miguel

I remember a few years back when I was really into video editing I began ripping music videos from MuchMusic, MTV2 & VH1 and served them on IRC.  I also launched the "Pookieguy Entertainment" website which offered a huge list of all my videos and weekly downloads.   During that time, I received numerous emails asking for help on video capture, editing and encoding.  A lot has changed since then and it is now easier than ever to capture & edit videos on your PC.   This extreme guide will cover mostly everything from video capture to encoding in your favorite format.  We will share with you some of the best hardware capture devices and software tools available today.

This guide will be split into 5 sections as follows:

  1. Video Capture: Some of the best consumer video capturing hardware and best third party software for video capture.

  2. Video Editing:  Best software to cut, join and edit videos.

  3. Video Encoding:  How to encode or convert videos to all formats including AVI, MPG, VCD, SVCD, DVD, Divx, etc.

  4. Video Authoring:  How to burn your videos to standard VCD, SVCD and DVD formats so they can be played in just about any DVD player.

  5. Playing: Best tools to play videos of all formats including Divx.

Note that this guide will cover a few of what we think are the best hardware and software tools available for video capturing, editing and playing.  We understand there is a wide selection of hardware and software out there and just because we don't mention or cover some of them doesn't mean they are not good or suitable for this type of work.   When it comes to video editing, I have learned that expensive is not always the best.  For example, a few of the best software tools are actually free!

Let's begin the guide now with the hardware.
